General Assembly of the United Nations
On the 15th of September 2005, at the 60th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, world leaders attended a world summit in New York at which a draft resolution document was agreed.
Basically, leaders acknowledged, agreed to and reaffirmed previously negotiated values, principles and issues as well as moving forward on a number of new items. The outcome is found in the 40 page document that focuses on a wide range of issues of high and world importance. Among these were:
Development
Debt
Trade
Quick impact initiatives
Education
Rural and agricultural development
HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and other health issues
Gender equality and empowerment of women
Meeting the special needs of Africa
Terrorism
Human Rights and the rule of law
As this was a negotiated document, with so many different parties involved, it was never going to satisfy everyone. Many groups and countries have expressed disappointment saying the document has been 'watered down', that the text's details were 'gutted in favour of abstract language', 'a recycling of old pledges'.
