Art & Design

Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced GCE Art and Design allow pupils to develop their creative skills in ways that are both challenging and rewarding.

In Fine Art, pupils have opportunities to work in a range of materials using a variety of processes such as drawing, print-making, sculpture and computer generated and manipulated imagery.

In Design, pupils may work in a number of areas such as, for example, graphic design, jewellery, products, fashion, illustration, theatre, environmental and architecture.

The courses should benefit:
  • Those who will undertake further study in Art and Design;
  • Those who will study subjects or take up careers for which an Art and Design education is relevant;
  • Those who, while having interest and aptitude in the subject, will not study the subject further.
The requirements for the examinations are as follows:

Advanced Subsidiary

The A2 units, which comprise the second half of the full Advanced GCE course, are as follows:

Assessment Unit    A2 3    A2 Externally Set Assignment (Compulsory)

Candidates will have a choice of the Dissertation topic which must be relevant to the candidate's area of study or personal interests evidenced in Assessment Unit A2 2: Fine Art or Design, or interests arising from work undertaken in the AS Assessment Units.

Trips for Art & Design Students

Annual trip to Belfast to see the 'Best of GCSE', 'Best of AS and A2' in Northern Ireland
Annual trip to the Ulster Museum to view exhibitions and take part in workshops with an Artist in Residence.
Annual Trip to 'Open Day at University of Ulster in Belfast' for AS and A2 pupils.
Many other trips which vary according to demand and requirements of coursework.

Pupils refer to a wide range of Artists, Designers and Craftworkers from contemporary and historical eras.

Third Level Education & Careers in Art and Design

Pupils are advised at the end of Key Stage 4 (GCSE) about possible career opportunities in Art and Design. A display in the classroom is frequently updated to inform them of their options.

Provision for Individual Study

A fully equipped Sixth Form Studio is available for AS and A2 pupils to work in during their spare time.

 History of Art

AS Qualification in History of Art and Design specification is designed to promote continuity, coherence and progression within the area.

Subject Content:

The course of study covers an awareness and critical understanding of, rather than practical execution of the following:
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Architecture
  • Interior Design
  • Product Design
  • Fashion / Textiles Design
Entry Requirements:
The course recognises the value of prior learning at GCSE Art and Design although no prior knowledge or level of attainment in the subject area is required.

Course Requirements:
  • There is no coursework element.
  • The exam consists of three one hour papers - AS 1 Part A - Critical analysis on a piece of visual stimulus Part B - Critical review of directly experienced artworks
  • AS 2 Two essays from a choice of eight possible questions
  • AS 3 Two essays from a choice of eight possible questions
  • Compulsory trip(s) to galleries and exhibitions and artists workshops.

Who does this course appeal to:
  • Those who will undertake further study in the history of Art and Design
  • Those who will study subjects or take up careers for which a history of Art and Design education is relevant.
  • Those who, while having interest and aptitude in the subject, will benefit from the course yet are not intending to study the subject further.

Aims of the course:
  • To develop intellectual, imaginative and creative powers.
  • To develop investigative, analytical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the role and achievement of artists, architects, craftspeople and designers in their part and in contemporary society.
  • Develop an understanding of the relationships between art, architecture, craft and design and society at large.
  • Encourage first-hand experience and enjoyment of artworks.
