Guidance for Year 13 - Subject Choice

As your Year 12 comes to an end and the GCSE Examinations begin, you are faced with a very difficult but very important decision. If you are returning to St Michael's after GCSE you will need to decide which subjects to study at AS and A2.

The choices you make now will undoubtedly have a major influence on your future direction in third level education and on the career path you ultimately follow. Equally, making the right choices will be very important in determining the extent to which you enjoy your Sixth Form studies and the degree of success that you achieve.

It is vital that you consider your decision very carefully before finally making up your mind. Already you will have had advice from your GCSE subject teachers, from your Careers teacher and from staff in the series of talks given on Wednesday mornings during the year about the content of AS and A2 Specifications.

These pages contain a summary of information about each of the subjects on offer in the Sixth Form in St Michael's and you should read carefully the information on all the subjects before making your final choice.

Finally, try to ensure that you make your choice for the right reasons:

Choose
  • Subjects you enjoy
  • Subjects in which you have experienced success
  • Subjects that are relevant to the third level courses and career that you hope to follow.

Do not allow yourself to be influenced by your friends' choices or by stories you may have heard about how difficult particular subjects are in the Sixth Form.
