Guidance for Year 13
English Literature
|
The study of English Literature at A2 and AS seeks to instil and foster a love and enjoyment of good literature. It is hoped that students will be intellectually and emotionally stimulated by being exposed to a rich and broad range of literature from various literary periods and genres.
A variety of teaching approaches are used to provide stimulus and variety in the learning process. Group discussions, student presentations, video and audio productions, CD Roms, exemplar material, examiners' reports, self-evaluation, comparisons with other students' work, regular visits to theatre and cinema, all contribute to the enjoyment of the course and the reinforcement of what is being studied. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning. They will be expected to read widely; texts by the same author, other than those prescribed, will be offered to the students to give them as full an experience as possible of their authors' works. In addition critical works of the texts will be studied to challenge and/or confirm students' own opinion. Students will be expected to read quality newspapers, magazines and reviews of novels, plays and poetry anthologies. The school library is well stocked to provide for the needs of the students. When necessary, additional project material is requested from the local Library Board. Two teachers have responsibility for the delivery of the syllabus in a two year period.
AS and A2 (full A Level) follow a modular course. Six units must be completed over the two year cycle. Three will be taken at the end of Lower Sixth and a further three in May/June of the final year. On the successful completion of the first three units students not studying for a full A Level (A2) will be awarded an AS qualification.
Each unit requires the intensive study of two texts as set out below
